A man, born and raised in the Islamic faith, whose father was a vocal critic of America, a vocal supporter of the Taliban, whose faith not only calls homosexuality a sin but calls for its punishment, called 911 to pledge allegiance to ISIS, then walked into a gay bar and shot over a hundred people. Less than a month prior to this crime, an ISIS spokesman called for “a month of hurt” to be committed against the West during the Ramadan observance. Prior to his act, the shooter also pledged his allegiance to ISIS in a letter. The man, who worked as an armed security guard for a multinational security corporation, had passed four separate background checks, two of them conducted by the FBI, and possessed a security officer license.
Occam’s Razor guides us toward selecting the simplest answer based on these facts. That simplest answer is that the killer embraced the hatred towards gays taught by his religion and was motivated to act by his affinity for and allegiance to ISIS.
Some on the American Left, however, have put forth the notion that this man’s crimes should be blamed on American Christians, and some have turned the entire narrative into a denouncement of gun rights and a call for their further infringement.
George Orwell once noted that:
Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them.
Sadly, the national conversation has indeed coalesced around gun rights and gun control, with only a brief, testy aside on the issue of “radical Islam,” words that our President has long refused to utter.
The stupid drags us all down.
