The central belief and fatal conceit of the current administration is that you are incapable of running your own life, but those in power are capable of running it for you. – Charles Koch
From the Wall Street Journal. Over 3500 comments were posted, many of them nakedly hostile, fact-free ad hominem attacks on the Koch brothers. They, more than anyone else, will be the “bogeyman” this political cycle, because they dare spend their money advocating against big government and those who embrace it.
The reality is that, in the big money game, they’re one medium sized fish in a big pond. Union money is incredibly powerful, and overwhelmingly biased towards the Dems. The big finance houses also spend big, and they’re all-inclusive. Rent-seeking doesn’t distinguish between red and blue in many sectors, and lots of big-money organizations spread the wealth evenly. Plus, there are other major billionaire donors all over the landscape, and while someone like George Soros gets big headlines, people like Sheldon Adelson operate under most people’s radar.
The Kochs? They co-founded the libertarian Cato Institute, they’re trustees of the Reason Foundation, they’re involved with Americans for Prosperity – all organizations that preach less government and more liberty. The Left DESPISES this message, and the establishment Right pretends they support it while still embracing big government.
Few big money people or groups support liberty. The Kochs do. Are they perfect? No one is. Yet they’re about the best we’ve got at the moment. And they stand in a lonely part of the landscape.
